How to read your quote

Quotes list the same few items in different orders and with different names. Find each one before you compare, and if an item is missing, ask for it in writing. The full picture is in our guide to car lease deals.

Monthly rental
The regular payment. It is only one part of the cost.
Initial rental
The first and larger payment, usually quoted as a number of monthly rentals. Here it replaces the first monthly payment.
Term
How many months you are committed. Longer terms usually lower the monthly rental but mean a longer commitment.
Mileage allowance
The miles per year included. Pay for what you need, but compare the excess charge too.
Excess mileage charge
Pence per mile for miles above the allowance, charged when the car goes back.
Admin fee
A one-off charge. It sits on top of the rentals, so it counts toward the total.
Questions to ask before you sign
  • What is the total I will pay over the whole term, including every fee?
  • Is the initial rental refundable in any circumstance, and is it a deposit or the first rental?
  • What is the excess mileage charge in pence per mile, and can I change my allowance part way through?
  • What does the admin or arrangement fee cover, and is there a separate delivery charge?
  • Is the car new, pre-registered or ex-stock, and what is the delivery date?
  • Is maintenance included, and does it cover tyres, brakes and servicing?
  • What counts as fair wear and tear, and is the BVRLA standard used?
  • What happens if I need to end the lease early, and how is the settlement calculated?
  • Is the funder or lessor FCA authorised, and is the broker authorised for credit broking?
  • What happens at the end: collection, inspection and any return charges?

Frequently asked questions

How do I compare two car lease quotes?

Compare the total you will pay over the whole term, not the monthly rental. Add the initial rental, every other monthly rental, the admin fee and any maintenance add-on, then divide by the number of months for an effective monthly cost. This tool does that for up to three quotes.

Why does a higher initial rental not make a lease cheaper?

A larger initial rental lowers the monthly rental, but you pay the money either way. Only the total over the term, and what you get for it, tells you whether one quote is better value than another.

How does the checker treat excess mileage?

You enter the miles you expect to drive each year. If that is more than the allowance, the extra miles are charged at the pence per mile in the quote. If it is less, the tool shows the unused miles you are paying for.

Does the checker say whether a quote is a good deal?

No. It ranks the quotes you enter against each other. It does not use market averages, so it cannot say whether all your quotes are high or low. Getting another quote is the way to test that.

Are insurance and fuel included?

No. A standard lease normally includes road tax but not insurance or fuel. If a quote bundles extras, add the maintenance figure here and compare the other inclusions using the questions below.

What if the quotes have different terms?

The effective monthly cost lets you compare a 24 month quote with a 36 month quote fairly, but a longer term also means more months committed. Check the early termination terms in each agreement.
