Our view

Where the Golf and Focus offer a narrower choice of engines, the Astra covers petrol, mild hybrid, plug-in hybrid and electric. A smaller hatchback boot and a touchscreen-led dashboard stop it topping the class.

Official figures, checked October 2026.

Plug-in hybrid economy is the official WLTP weighted figure, which assumes the battery is charged regularly. With a flat battery a plug-in hybrid runs mostly on petrol, so real economy is much lower on long journeys. Electric economy is shown in miles per kWh.

Best way to get this car

How the main ways to fund a Astra compare. General guidance only, not financial advice or an offer.

Lease (PCH)

Fixed monthly costs suit a family car and shield the driver from plug-in and electric depreciation.

PCP

Common route, though the Astra's residuals are less strong than the Golf's.

HP (hire purchase)

Straightforward ownership at the end but with higher monthly payments.

Subscription

Flexible but typically costlier over time.

Buy outright

Lower used values make outright buying of a nearly new Astra reasonable.

Leasing vs buying

Leasing
  • ✓On a plug-in hybrid or the electric Astra, a lease sidesteps worry about battery value later
  • ✓The GSe is a quick plug-in that is easier to enjoy for a few years than to commit to owning
  • ✓A short agreement keeps options open while electric car rules continue to move
  • ✓Griffin, GS and Ultimate can be chosen per driver, and the Sports Tourer adds load space for families
Buying
  • ✓A used Astra costs less than a comparable Golf, a real draw for value-minded owners
  • ✓Wide parts supply helps keep repair bills reasonable on an older car
  • ✓The 145 hybrid is relaxed on the motorway and suits an owner racking up miles
  • ✓A varied range means engine and body can be matched to a long-term plan

Which works out cheaper depends on your annual mileage, how long you keep the car and whether you want to own it. Try the true cost of leasing calculator to compare.
