The most economical new cars in the UK

Every new petrol, diesel and hybrid car on sale in the UK ranked by its official combined fuel economy. Plug-in hybrids and electric cars are left out because their official figures are measured differently; they have their own tables.

How this table is built

We take the WLTP combined mpg each manufacturer submits to the VCA, drop any row whose mpg and CO2 can't both be right (a sign of a data entry error), and keep the best-performing version of each model.

Official figures come from a standard lab test and are best used to compare cars, not to predict exactly what you will get on the road.

Frequently asked questions

Why is my real-world mpg lower than the official figure?+

WLTP is a lab test with a fixed driving cycle. Cold weather, short trips, motorway speeds, roof boxes and heavy loads all cut real-world economy, so most drivers see somewhat less than the official number. It is still the fairest way to compare cars with each other.

Are hybrids always more economical?+

Not always. Full hybrids shine in town where they can run on electric power, but on long motorway runs a modern diesel can match or beat them. Mild hybrids save a little fuel but cannot drive on electric power alone.

Does better mpg mean cheaper road tax?+

Indirectly. First-year VED is set by CO2 emissions, and CO2 falls as mpg rises. After the first year, most cars pay the same standard rate, plus a supplement if the list price is over the expensive car threshold. Check current rates on gov.uk.
