Frequently asked questions

What is the expensive car supplement?

Cars with a list price over £40,000 pay an extra yearly charge on top of the standard rate in years two to six. From April 2025 this started to apply to new electric cars too, with a £50,000 threshold for electric cars, which gov.uk applies to electric cars registered from 1 April 2025.

Do electric cars pay road tax now?

Yes. Since 1 April 2025 electric cars pay £10 in the first year and then the standard rate, where before they paid nothing.

Why is the first-year tax so high on some cars?

The first-year rate rises steeply with CO2 emissions to discourage the most polluting cars. After year one almost every car pays the same standard rate.

Does leasing change the road tax?

No. Road tax is included in a lease and the leasing company pays it, but the amount is still set by these official rates. This tool shows what that tax costs.

Is the list price the same as what I paid?

Use the published list price when new, including factory options. Discounts you negotiated do not change the supplement test.
