Frequently asked questions

Why is my real mpg lower than the official figure?

The official number comes from a standard lab test. Cold weather, short trips, fast motorway driving and heavy loads all cut economy, so most drivers see somewhat less. It is still the fairest way to compare cars.

How do I work out the cost to charge an electric car?

Divide your yearly miles by the car's miles per kWh to get units of electricity, then multiply by your price per unit. Home charging is usually far cheaper than public rapid charging.

Is an electric car always cheaper to fuel?

Almost always if you can charge at home on a normal or off-peak tariff. If you rely on public rapid chargers the gap narrows and can disappear.

What price should I use for petrol?

Use what you actually pay locally. We start you off with the latest DESNZ weekly UK average, but prices move weekly, so edit it.

Do these figures include tax, insurance or servicing?

No. This tool is fuel and charging only. Use the true monthly cost tool for an all-in figure.
