Frequently asked questions
What is benefit in kind on a company car?
If your employer gives you a car you can use privately, HMRC treats it as a taxable benefit. You pay income tax on a percentage of the car's P11D value, set by its CO2 emissions and, for plug-in hybrids, its electric range.
Why are electric company cars taxed so little?
The government set very low percentages to encourage low-emission cars. An electric car is on 4% for 2026/27, rising by two points a year to 9% by 2029/30, still far below a petrol car.
What is a P11D value?
It is the car's list price including VAT and delivery, minus the first registration fee and the cost of the first year's road tax. Your employer or the manufacturer's price list will have it.
Do plug-in hybrids still get low company car tax?
Less than before. From April 2028 all cars emitting 1 to 50 g/km move to a single flat rate regardless of electric range, which raises the tax on many plug-in hybrids sharply.
Is this tax advice?
No. It is an estimate using official percentages to help you compare cars. Confirm your own position with HMRC or an accountant.
